Our goal is to create a trip for the
"go-getter" multi-sport enthusiasts who want non-stop action!
This trip shows-off Southeast
Alaska's finest - whitewater rafting, biking, glacial trekking and
kayaking with whales. We've thought of everything!
-
Glacial Trekking & camping.
-
Whitewater rafting on the upper
Blanchard River.
-
Cycle along the stunning coast-line
near Chilkat State Park.
-
Whale watching and sea kayaking at
Point Adolphus.
Day 1 -We will gather for a
delicious Alaskan dinner and attend the pre-trip meeting held at
historic accommodations.
Day 2 - After an early
breakfast, we hop into vans and head over the Chilkat Pass into the
Yukon's Kluane National Park. Whitewater rafting is on the agenda on
the Blanchard section of the upper Tatshenshini River. The
breath-taking scenery of this pristine wilderness area is enhanced
by the exhilarating class III whitewater rapids. After an exciting
and awe-inspiring day, we drive back to Haines and enjoy a quiet
evening at our cozy accommodations.
Day 3 - Eat your Wheaties this
morning! We're trading in paddles for bike helmets and heading out
of Haines towards the Chilkat State Park. Our guides will lead you
on a moderately challenging 10 mile ride along magnificent
coastline. We cycle past the remains of historical Letnikof Cove
Cannery, a reminder of Haines' beginning as a deep-sea port. Feast
your eyes on the stunning 7,000 ft. Cathedral Peaks and sparkling
Rainbow and Davidson glaciers in the distance. A picnic lunch will
be served on the beach.
After our ride, we return to our
Hotel for a quick shower. Then grab your bags and we're off to the
mountains! We travel by ferry and war canoe and eventually end up at
the foot of the Davidson Glacier. We have dinner in camp and settle
into tents for our first evening spent outside.
Day 4- Any day that begins
with strapping on crampons has to be full of adventure. Today, we
head up to the ice! Our professional mountain guides gear us up and
give us an introduction to glacial trekking. Then we set out onto
the Davidson Glacier to test out our newly acquired skills. We spend
a spectacular day gaining altitude and are rewarded with
jaw-dropping views. We return to camp that evening for a delicious
meal before dropping into our sleeping bags.
Day 5- After a morning on the
glacier, we journey from the mountains to the ocean. Our flight from
the beach at Davidson Glacier will take us over the glaciers we just
climbed and onto spectacular flightseeing over stunning Glacier Bay
National Park. We will land in the quiet village of Gustavus and
check into our charming Alaska Discovery Inn. This evening, we
gather for a group dinner.
Day 6- After an early
breakfast, our own charter boat will carry us across Icy Strait to
Point Adolphus - feeding grounds for humpback whales.
Our guides give us a kayak lesson and
then we hit the water. Traveling in 2 person sea kayaks allows us to
glide silently through pristine waters observing the abundant marine
life. Humpback whales, sea otters, steller sea lions, harbor seals,
porpoise, orcas, bald eagles and dozen of marine bird species
frequent this area. After a magical day, we retire in our tents once
again and fall asleep to the sound of whales feeding.
Day 7-8 - Don't be surprised
if you wake to the splashing and blowing of humpbacks. They often
treat us to a breakfast show along the shoreline of our camp. We'll
spend the days kayaking among whales, sea lions, seals, bald eagles,
sea birds, and other marine life, and exploring the verdant old
growth forest. We camp on pristine beaches with expansive views. Our
guides will cook the finest meals this side of the Fairweather
Range. We'll meet our boat on day eight for a whale-watching trip
back to Gustavus. After gathering our belongings, we will again
board the small air taxis and head back to Alaska's Capital city
where we will say our final good-byes.
